my top 10 cher songs (as of current)

 MY TOP 10 CHER SONGS

it goes without saying that i'm a massive cher fan. well, i have listened to all of her solo discography as well as up to album 2 from sonny and cher. i am staying home from college for the weekend and have spare time on my hands, so why not make a list of my personal top 10 favorite songs by the goddess of pop?

expect to see these posts with other artists i'm into in the future.

also, a disclaimer: this list is subject to change.

okay, on with the list! this time, i'd like to list some honorable mentions in no notable order:

HM #1: Bell Bottom Blues - Stars (1975)

a solid cover from one of her best albums. i absolutely ADORE the original song and enjoy this one as well. however, it's not enough for me to put it in my top 10, and this cover has some changes that are inferior to the original, like the way some parts are sung as well as the slower speed. still a great one!

HM #2: War Paint and Soft Feathers - Cherished (1977)

i really like how the song starts, shit is my jam. i always liked cher's story songs even if she doesn't herself. the vocals and instrumentals are on point and i love the jangling of the bells. there are much better songs here, but i really love that beginning.

HM #3: I Paralyze - I Paralyze (1982)

i really love the production of this one, super unique and paralyzes me (heh). that's the strongest point. it's an honorable mention only because i don't find myself listening to it as much as the others (plus i love the others way more) but this is a great song too. i paralyze (1982) is actually one of her best albums too and i recommend every song on there, this title track especially!

HM #4: It's a Crying Shame - I'd Rather Believe In You (1976)

i love her vocals here! it's just a bit redundant. yes, i know this is a cover but my point still stands. i also don't listen to this one as much. also, i can't help but mention how much i love the cover of this album. it just hits my eyes so right, look at that b&w color scheme! gorgeous!

HM #5: For What It's Worth - 3614 Jackson Highway (1969)

this album is incredibly underrated. sure, it's all covers but some of them are nicely done. an example of this is what it's worth. this is much better than the original, but i like some other songs a teeeeeensy bit more. i like her vocals here, very relaxed and calm. the production goes nicely with it.

HM #6. Hell on Wheels - Prisoner (1979)

very catchy and memorable song from one of her finest albums. i like the lyrics and vocals. i don't know what else to say.

10. Living In a House Divided - Foxy Lady (1972)

i used to think foxy lady was a complete nothingburger album; it's not bad but it doesn't stand out in the slightest. however, after looking for cher songs to display on my instagram notes, i heard a sample of this song and was blown away by it and the fact i seriously overlooked it after listening to it. cher's vocals are very powerful here and the lyrics are also really great. incredibly underrated hit from a very underrated album

9. Thunderstorm - Cherished (1977)

love the album cover and clever title. i feel like this album was pretty mixed overall, some incredibly unforgettable songs that i'm not fond of, and some great songs that have become some of my personal favorites, such as thunderstorm. i love the vocals and the way they're sung, especially how it goes up and extra pitch. also the background vocals stand out to me. ("whoaaa-hooooa!" "i sweaaaar!")

8. Dark Lady - Dark Lady (1974)

one of the two songs that got me more into cher, i love the vocals on this one. it's very catchy and succeeds in giving off that mysterious and spooky vibe. the storytelling in this song is pretty great too, and feels very vivid.

7. Masters of War - Backstage (1968)

i liked backstage (1968) and found it odd that so many people thought otherwise. songs like "go now" and "the click song" stick out in my mind as songs i liked and actually remember. to be honest, this is the best song on the album. i actually like it way more than bob dylan's original version. the production here is great and i love the instruments used here. it's not a bland cover by any means and her voice does have emotion. everything just pieces itself together really well here.

6. Gypsys, Tramps, and Thieves - Chér/Gypsys, Tramps, and Thieves (1971)

top 5 and of course i had to include the other song that got me more into cher. i love the jingles and melodies in the production as well cher's vocals. the song is super, dare i say it again, catchy and is one of those songs i can't help but sway to. i've had this song on repeat since the day i listened to it and it's popular for a reason, absolutely stellar.

5. The Book of Love - I Paralyze (1982)

sounds like "girl of 100 lists" by the go-go girls, which i know came out later, but that's another song i enjoy hence why i like this one. i like the vocals and the volume her voice takes at the end of the song. the more rocky-aor approach fits cher's voice very well and i do love the content of the lyrics too. good shit. very underrated hit from a very underrated album.

4. Train of Thought - Dark Lady (1974)

i love the mania in this one! hell on wheels sounds kind of like this one but the difference is the lyrics and production of this one is superior. the train whistling and hollering on the background, the dramatic violins, the repetition ("gotta get off, gotta get off!"), the vividness of the lyrics and the story they tell. it's so unique and so well-made, her loud and frantic vocals top it all off like a cherry on a sundae. superb. chef's kiss.

3. Pirate - Cherished (1977)

god i love pirate. the unique shanty seas instrumentals, the lyrics, the vocals, i only want the right to love this song and i've been granted them. this one has been on repeat for months now and it will remain one of my favorite cher songs until the end of time. once again i love the storytelling in this one, i wonder if they're from the view of a siren? ("i'm not gonna take your soul") interesting stuff!

2. I Walk On Guilded Splinters - 3614 Jackson Highway (1969)

i cannot stop listening to this one. this cover is so much better than the original and the production is fantastic. cher's voice is amazing here and carries smugness, slyness, and it just sounds terrific. i'm not sure what she says around the end. really underrated hit from an underrated album. i didn't care for it too much at first (although i did like it), but a revisit made me realize this is one of her best songs. everything just works here.

con bu nay killy con con, walk on guilded splinters!

1. Flashback - I'd Rather Believe In You (1976)

this is it. cher's greatest song ever. the smooth instrumentals and vocals, the lyrics, the "FLASHBACK!"'s, the....the ESSENCE of this song. it's all perfect. my favorite song by her ever. from her entire discography, this one sticks out the most. this is literally my alarm in the mornings and i never get tired of it. i have no complaints toward this song and i can't put it into words just how much i love it.

"summer days, running in the rain...
into nights, spinning in my brain..."
